Excellency Gov. Sprague
Dear Sir
Noticing your
intention to raise a Colored Regt. In your
State. I would respectfully recommend
to your favorable notice as Chaplain
of said Regt. Rev. John N. Mars of
this place, a colored man of talent
and ability, an earnest Christian
Minister of the Methodist Church, a
liberal minded working Christian
who would devote his time and
talent to the good of his charge.
If you see fit to entertain favorably
the above application additional testimony
to the truth of the above will be
Hoping your example will be followed
by other Governors, and that the Government
will see the pressing necessity
of accepting the aid of the
colored man in suppressing this
wicked Rebellion. I am
