Image of the laying of the State House cornerstone, 1896. There was a grand ceremony for the placing of the State House Cornerstone on October 15, 1896. In a lead box inside the cornerstone is the record that Grover Cleveland was President, Charles Warren was Lippitt was Governor and Edwin D. McGuiness was Mayor of Providence. Their names were recorded on a large silver plate. Also placed in the box were copies of the Providence Journal, Providence Telegram and Providence News, along with the state general laws, photos of state officials and Masonic documents.
