NAICS Codes

Tutorial for Searches on Corporate Database

NAICS stands for North American Industry Classification System

It is the standard used by federal statistical agencies in classifying business establishments for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and publishing statistical data related to the U.S. business economy.

Why do you want to use these codes?

The Business Services Division has always had basic data about entities and organizations doing business in Rhode Island. As the Department of State works to empower and engage all Rhode Islanders, and to enhance commerce across the state, we have begun to collect additional data that will provide insight to economic trends and the types of businesses that call Rhode Island home.

How can it help RI's businesses?

We are asking all business corporations, limited liability companies, and non-profit corporations to report a NAICS code on the entity’s annual report. The NAICS code will allow the Business Services Division to accurately report the types of business conducted in Rhode Island. You can now search the Corporate Database by NAICS code.
