Scope and Contents: In 1885, the state decided to replace the old wooden bridge with a new steel structure that could accommodate more traffic as well as streecar traffic. It was also meant to address navigational problems with the old bridge. In 1890, the General Assembly appointed a commission to consider property owners' claims for damages resulting from the construction of the new bridge during the late 1880s (PL 1890, ch. 875.) This series consists of individual petitioners' files with documentation relating to claims for damages resulting from construction of the new bridge. Included are petitions and commissioners' assessments of the petiions, and transcripts of testimony. Each file also includes maps showing the property and its vicinity.
