Name: Rhode Island E 9-1-1 Uniform Emergency Telephone System Authority (1984-)

Historical Note:

Planning of Rhode Island's E 9-1-1 System began in 1978, with the appointment of a 15 member legislative commission to study the feasibility of adopting a Uniform Emergency Telephone Syste, (9-1-1) statewide.  By 1984, the commission submitted its final report after 27 meetings, 5 public hearings and extensive study of the subject.  The commission recommended the implementation of a Unform Emergency Telephone System.

In 1984, based on the recommendations of the commission, the General Assembly enacted a law establishing the Enhanced 9-1-1 Uniform Emergency Telephone System Authority and published that law under Title 39, Chapter 21, Section 39-21-1.

The Rhode Island Enhanced 9-1-1 Uniform Emergency Telephone System went on line November 21, 1988.
