Planning of Rhode Island's E 9-1-1 System began in 1978, with the appointment of a 15 member legislative commission to study the feasibility of adopting a Uniform Emergency Telephone Syste, (9-1-1) statewide. By 1984, the commission submitted its final report after 27 meetings, 5 public hearings and extensive study of the subject. The commission recommended the implementation of a Unform Emergency Telephone System.
In 1984, based on the recommendations of the commission, the General Assembly enacted a law establishing the Enhanced 9-1-1 Uniform Emergency Telephone System Authority and published that law under Title 39, Chapter 21, Section 39-21-1.
The Rhode Island Enhanced 9-1-1 Uniform Emergency Telephone System went on line November 21, 1988.
