Name: Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (1964-)

Historical Note: Rhode Island Public Transit Authority created in 1964 per Rhode Island Public Law Chapter 210 (H-1170A - An Act Creating the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority and Providing for its Powers and Duties, Being in Amendment of and in Addition to Title 39 of the General Laws Entitled "Public Utilities and Carriers" as Amended).  This act allowed the state to acquire any private company if abandonment of its service would hurt the public. In 1966 RIPTA acquired the United Transit Company, a state conglomerate of street railways and buses.<span style="display: none;"> </span>
