Name: Rhode Island. State Record Commissioner (1896 - 1910)
Historical Note: 1896 Resolution No. 64 (passed May 14, 1896) authorized the appointment of a State Records Commissioner to be appointed by the Governor. The duty of the Records Commissioner was to prepare an inventory and report on the condition of the various public records in the custody of state and municipal officers. The first Record Commissioner was R. Hammett Tilley. In 1910, pursuant to Public Law Chapter 645, the functions of the Record Commissioner was combined with those of the State Librarian.
