Historical Note:

The State Board of Insurance Commissioners was established under the 1857 Revised Statutes Title 19 and Chapter 129.  The board was to comprise the Secretary of State, the State Auditor and the General Treasurer.  Duties included the examination of statements and returns required to be filed by insurance companies and agents and to require further explaination under oath if necessary. The Commissioners were also required to prepare printed abstracts of statements and returns to be presented to the General Assembly in January of each year.

In 1935 the board was superseded by the Division of Banking and Insurance under the Department of Taxation and Regulation (Public Law Chapter 2188).  This unit was superseded by the Department of Business Regulation established by 1939 Chapter 660 of the Public Laws (Administrative Act of 1939 Section 120)
