Benjamin Hoppin house photograph | State Archives Catalog
Scope and Contents: 1 - 20 x 16 photoprint of the Benjamin Hoppin house (built 1815) on 283 Westminster Street near Snow Street. The house was demolished in 1876 to make way for the Hoppin Homestead building (1883). That building was eventually demolished in 1979 and is now a parking lot bordered by Aborn and Snow Streets. Shows view of the mansion from the corner of Aborn and Westminster Streets and includes the view of the stable on Aborn St. Also called “Hoppin’s Folly” and the “Bureau House” because it looked like a chest of drawers. It was also the home of Governor William W. Hoppin (in office 1854-1857, 1807-1890).
