The 1955 convention was held for the limited purpose to address three proposals of amendment to the Rhode Island Constitution:  (1) an increase in compensation of members of legislature; (2) life tenure for judges of supreme & superior courts & (3) redevelopment & rehabilitation of blighted substandard & unsanitary areas within cities & towns.  At a special election held July 12, 1955, questions 1 and 2 were overwhelmingly rejected by voters by over a two to one margin.  Question three, redevelopment approved 23,383 to 14.968.  Collection consists of convention transcripts, resolutions & various papers including roll call votes, proclamations, agendas, lists for personnel, etc. Under provisions of public law 1955 chapter 3487, “An Act to provide for calling a Constitutional Convention of the People of the State of Rhode Island for the purpose of amending the Constitution” a special election was held on June 9, 1955 in which the voters approved 24,077 to 20,120.  Convening at the Veterans’ Memorial building auditorium in Providence on June 20, 1955, 200 delegates with Governor Dennis J. Roberts serving as chairman and Herbert Carkin as Secretary met to consider three amendment proposals (1) increase compensation for members of the legislature; (2) life tenure for judges of supreme & superior courts & (3) redevelopment of blighted and substandard and unsanitary areas in cities and town.  At a second special election held July 12, 1955 questions (1) and (2) were overwhelmingly rejected by the voters by a two to one margin.  Question 3 relating redevelopment to the was approved 23,383 to 14.968
