Records documenting the convention proceedings and ratification of the first Rhode Island Constitution authorized to replace the English royal charter, which had served as the basis of governmental structure and hierarchy since first obtained in July 1663.  Constitution ratified in convention November 5, 1842 and voted upon by the freemen qualified under the charter November 21 - 23, 1842.  Passing by a vote of 7,032 for and 59 against the constitution officially went into effect Tuesday May 2, 1843.  Collection encompasses proceedings of the convention authorized on February 6, 1841 but rejected the following year March 21 – 24, 1842 by a vote of 8,013 for and 8,689 against as well as those of the second convention authorized established June 24, 1842.  Records include convention journals, proposed articles & resolutions, reports, rough drafts, petitions received, delegate expense receipts and ratified constitutions including copy of the "Peoples" Constitution approved by the supporters of Thomas Wilson Dorr not qualified to vote under charter December 27 - 29, 1841.  Collection arranged within 74 folders C#00587 & C#00588
