Manuscript records detailing activity of the Newport police department (322 volumes).  Includes

(1) Complaint / incident ledgers Sept. 13, 1882 – Oct. 1, 1958 (209 volumes) detailing daily activity / circumstances of responded calls.  Additional volumes dedicated to liquor complaints made Nov. 30, 1901 – May 5, 1906 (1 volume); police inspector investigations Jan. 1, 1954 – Mar. 9, 1957 (1 volume); case books, June 30, 1920 – Aug. 10, 1937  (3 volumes); traffic accidents Jan. 3, 1925 – June 18, 1955 (9 volumes); traffic violations Aug. 25, 1939 – Aug. 31, 1942 (1 volume) & bicycles stolen, 1943 - 1950

(2) Arrest books Jan. 1, 1870 – Feb. 24, 1974 (83 volumes) showing residence, nationality & personal property of person detained, date & place from which brought in, name of arresting officer, cell number assigned, offence, result or discharge information & remarks.  Two additional manuscripts noting individuals transferred to State institutions at Cranston Jan. 1, 1918 – Dec. 16, 1926 with reference to nature of original offense, place from which brought in, name of state institution received & payments made / due concerning & station lodgers June 17, 1902 – Feb. 13, 1936 providing daily account of individuals occupying police department cells.  Includes time of arrival, age, height, eye color, nativity, officer on duty & residence

(3) Officer time / duty logs, etc. Sept. 10, 1864 – 1970’s (10 volumes with gaps)

(4) Animal control / pound ledger giving location & number of animals brought & payments concerning Jan. 1949 – Oct. 1952

(5) Register of licensed establishments / vendors giving name of proprietor, address.  Includes licenses granted for liquor sales, taverns, bowling alleys, billiard & pool halls, shooting galleries, peddlers, junk dealers, etc 1915 – 1916 (1 volume)
