Military Returns – General Assembly Annual returns submitted to the governor & general assembly by state militia & independent chartered companies confirming officers chosen and/or present strength of men, arms, ammunition & accoutrements.  Include unit rosters, pay rolls, duty performed, appointments & resignations, correspondence & reports, etc.  Reporting requirements mandated by “An Act to organize the Militia of this State” passed April 5, 1794 (C#0210 - Acts & Resolves of the General Assembly, 1791 - 1794, Vol. 27#162) & Act to Organize the Militia – Chartered companies to make returns to the General Assembly (1822 Statutes, pp. 320 – 329, Sec. 32) – That it shall be the duty of each and every commanding officer of each and every chartered independent military company within this State, to make return of the officers elected by said companies respectively, at the first session of the general assembly which shall be holden after the election of such officers, in order that they may be respectively approved according to law: that together with such returns the said commanding officers shall severally return the names and equipment of all the men belonging to their respective companies at the time of electing their officers thus returned.
