Registry of three hundred & eight merchant vessels documented with Intendants Trade at Providence in conformity of Act of the General Assembly passed June, 1776, regulating trade and establishing officers for entering and clearing vessels. Includes, vessel name, type & tonnage, owner, master, date & place built and signature of individual making oath under seal of Governor & Intendant Henry Ward or Deputy Intendant William Mumford; C#0504
Act regulating trade & shipping passed by the General Assembly June 17, 1776. Offices of Intendants of Trade established at Newport & Providence to take bonds, payable to the Governor & Company of the Colony from masters of every vessel with surety posted double the value cargos shipped. Vessels required to file certificates within eighteen months from office at the port where cargo delivered under seal of their or three “respectable” merchants residing there. Intendants also to take manifests upon oath of cargoes exported and imported and keep account of entries, giving bills of health when desired and granting registers showing the property of the vessel cleared out. Intendants required make returns to the General Assembly at every session of all imports & exports Two chosen annually by the General Assembly with offices in Newport & Providence (Acts & Resolves 1776, Part II, p. 135). Several additional acts regarding the regulating of trade passed by legislature from 1780 – 1785, until authority vested with Congress by Act of March 1786 (Acts & Resolves, 1786 – 1787, Vol. 25 p. 15).
