The Rhode Island Rehabilitation Council was established in April 1962 under the Department of Health's Division of Health Facilities. It was established after the Chief of the Health Facilities division undwertook the annual revision of the state's Hospital Plan in 1961. The preparation of the plan revealed a lack of information about the relationships among the state's rehabilitative facilities and services, and a lack of coordination among them. A meeting of state agencies involved in rehabilitation was convened where a decision was made that the Department of Health should arrange to establish a State Rehabilitation Council dedicated to long-term planning for rehabilitative services.
