The formation of the Jamestown Bridge Commission was authorized by Public Law Chapter 2536 (S-41A approved April 27, 1937) of the January Session 1937 (An Act Relating to the Construction of a Toll Bridge Between the Towns of Jamestown and North Kingstown: Providing for the Creation of a Bridge Commission: Authorizing said Commission to Construct, Operate and maintain said Bridge and Authorizing the Issuance of Bridge Revenue Bonds of the State).

The Jamestown Bridge Commission acted as an agency of the state without power to pledge the credit of the state or any political subdivision thereof and without power to directly, indirectly, or contingently obligate the state or any political subdivision thereof to collect any form of taxation or make any appropriation for the payment of the bonds herein authorizes or interest thereon.

The Commission was responsible for the financing, building and operation of the first Jamestown Bridge.

On June 28, 1969  the Commission ceased to collect tolls on the bridge (per 1942 Public Law Chapter 2536 Section 14)  .Also per that law and on the date cited above, the Department of Public Works (now the Department of Transportation) took possession of the bridge which became part of the state highway system.

The final meeting and dissolution of the commission took place on January 9, 1970.
