The Secretary of State has had a longstanding role in the administration of Rhode Island’s electoral process. The Elections  Division organizes and implements all federal, state, and municipal elections that occur in Rhode Island, encourages civic action, and educates Rhode Island citizens about the election process and the importance of civic involvement. Its mission is “ to improve civic education in Rhode Island and provide information that voters need to participate in government and hold government accountable.” It also “encourages Rhode Islanders to participate in the civic life of their communities through volunteer and public service programs.”  Its specific functions include:

-promote voter registration and turnout

-prepare ballot and sample for federal, state, and municipal elections

-offer Braille and tactile ballots for visually impaired

-qualify/certify names of federal/state candidates

-maintain the state’s central voter registration system (CVRS)
